Outfit magic for camera confidence (no fashion degree required)
So, you booked a portrait session — cue the excitement… and the closet meltdown. What to wear? What not to wear? Is it okay to wear jeans? (Spoiler: sometimes, yes!) As a Charleston portrait photographer who’s seen everything from killer jumpsuits to socks with sandals (yep), I’m here to walk you through it — with a glass of grace, a splash of humor, and zero judgment.
First Things First: It’s Not About the Clothes
It’s about how you feel in them. When you feel good, you look good. That’s not fluff — it’s science (okay, it’s mostly psychology and great lighting). Confidence always photographs better than couture. Now let’s talk outfit strategy. My Charleston, SC portrait sessions include a nice array of outfits bound to fit. You are welcome to and encouraged to bring a bunch of wardrobe with you. I will provide a wardrobe guide and also do wardrobe consultation session with you.

✅ Do Wear These
1. Solids or Simple Patterns
Solids photograph like a dream — especially jewel tones, neutrals, and soft pastels. Think: rich emerald, dusty rose, navy, soft taupe.
If you’re a pattern person, keep it subtle. Think texture (lace, knit, satin) over loud florals or prints that could compete with your face.
2. Clothing That Moves
Flowy dresses, long skirts, lightweight fabrics = dreamy motion and flattering lines. Movement in portraits adds elegance and emotion (and makes you feel like you’re in a movie).
3. Tailored, Not Tight
Fitted = yes. Tight = no thank you. Your clothes should skim your shape, not squeeze it. Avoid anything that digs, rides up, or leaves marks — comfort is queen.
4. Layered Looks
Layers give your images depth and versatility. Think jackets, cardigans, shawls, or even scarves — things you can add or remove during the session.
🚫 Skip These
1. Logos, Words, or Loud Graphics
They pull focus, date your images, and often look unflattering in photos. Your face and expression should be the star — not your favorite coffee brand or band tee.
2. Neon or Bright Whites
Neon casts weird colors on your skin, and bright white can blow out highlights in natural light. Try off-white, cream, or soft gray instead.
3. Unfamiliar Outfits
Your portrait session is not the time to try a new silhouette or wear something “just because it’s trendy." Stick with pieces you’ve worn before — ones that make you feel gorgeous and grounded.
Pro Tips from a Photographer’s Closet
🧵 Bring Options: Two to three outfit changes give us creative range — casual, elegant, maybe a little bold. I’ll help you pick the best combos day-of.
👣 Don’t Forget Shoes: Yes, even if you plan to go barefoot — they matter during outfit swaps, walking between setups, or for those full-body shots.
👙 Undergarments Count: Nude-tone bras and seamless panties save the day more often than you think.
💄 Makeup & Hair: Professional hair and makeup isn’t required, but it is a serious confidence boost. (Need a referral? I gotchu.)

Still Stuck? Let’s Build a Mood Board
If you’re not sure what “your style” is — we can create a mood board together before your session. It’s like Pinterest, but with less stress and more sparkle.
You Deserve to Feel Beautiful
Whether you’re coming in with jeans and a cozy sweater or a flowing satin gown — it’s not about impressing the camera. It’s about honoring yourself. Your portrait session is a celebration of your beauty, your legacy, and your story. Let’s make sure your outfit is just the cherry on top.
