Whether it’s a portrait session, an overdue update, or even a random selfie… panic sets in fast. For example:

 

·       Where do I put my hands?

·       Do I smile with teeth or not?

·       Am I standing weird?!

·       Where do I even look?

 

Good news: it’s not just you. Even the most confident folks can freeze when a camera lens is aimed their way. So, let’s look at three posing tricks I use with clients in my Charleston, SC studio— and they work every single time to help you look and feel confident, natural, and magazine-cover ready. 1. Hips: Shift Your Weight and Pop That Hip

 Standing stiff as a board? Fast track to awkwardville. Instead, try this: Shift your weight to your back leg and pop your hip slightly — away from the camera. Your body will instantly takes on a more natural, relaxed shape.

Bonus: It flatters your curves, elongates your frame, and gives you that “effortlessly confident” energy.


 Want to level it up?

·       Ladies: Cross one foot slightly in front of the other — it adds grace and movement without looking “posed.”

·       Gents: You can cross too, but get that front foot up on a toe — it adds subtle strength and presence.

2. Hands: Give Them Something to Do

Ah yes — the classic “what the heck do I do with my hands” crisis. Here’s the fix: give your hands something to do! Hands are expressive. The more natural they feel, the more natural you’ll look.

 

  • Try one of these:

    • Gently touch your neck or jawline (adds elegance – women only)

    • Hold onto a jacket, scarf, or hat

    • Tuck a thumb into a pocket

    • Lightly rest a hand on your hip or waist (men – use with intention)

 

And the golden rule:

👉 Always angle the side of your hand toward the camera — never the palm or back (unless you're a guy — then the back or palm can work for a more rugged feel).

 

3. Chin Out, Down, and Breathe

This one’s practically a trade secret: chin slightly out and slightly down — no more than an inch or so. Why? It defines your jawline, avoids the dreaded double (or triple!) chin situation, and adds quiet confidence to your posture.

 

But don’t overdo it — subtle is key. Then — and this is huge — take a breath. Inhale slowly, then exhale even slower. That tiny pause softens your face, drops your shoulders, and brings out the real you.
