Behind the Scenes of a Real Session (What to Expect)
Ever wondered what really happens behind the scenes of a portrait session? (Spoiler: it’s way more laughter and way less “awkward posing” than you think.) Whether you’re booking for yourself, your family, or your business, here’s a peek into what the process looks like from start to finish with a Charleston SC photographer.
Step 1: The Consultation – Let’s Dream It Up
Before the camera ever comes out, we chat. This is where we talk about your vision:
Timeless black-and-white portraits
Charleston’s iconic streets as your backdrop
A cozy lifestyle vibe at your home
Hair and makeup styles and how to merge your ideas with mine
Wardrobe ideas to fit the vibe we’re going for
Post-processing styles and options
Final image presentation — wall art, albums, digitals, etc.
Pricing and package options
This step is all about planning a session that feels like you.
Step 2: Wardrobe, Hair & Makeup – The Glow-Up
Here’s where the magic begins. I’ll help guide you on what to wear, colors that flatter, and styles that work with your vibe. For many clients, we also arrange professional hair and makeup so you can step in front of the camera feeling your absolute best. Most clients are surprised at how relaxed this part feels — it’s more like getting ready for a fun night out than a stiff photo shoot.
Step 3: On Location – Lights, Camera, Confidence
When the session starts, the nerves usually last about… two minutes. Then it’s just fun. I’ll guide your poses (no stiff, awkward mannequin arms here) and adjust the lighting and angles so you can relax into the moment. Charleston makes this part easy — golden oaks, cobblestones, waterfront views… the city is basically a giant set that’s always camera-ready.
You and I will review all the wardrobe options — both yours and from my studio collection. I’ll set up Bluetooth speakers so you can play your own playlist (or we can use mine). Music always helps create a calm, easy mood. 😊
Step 4: The Little Moments You Don’t See
This is where “behind the scenes” gets real:
Me fixing a flyaway hair strand mid-shot
You cracking up because I said something ridiculous
Adjusting light stands while you sneak a quick sip of Diet Coke (because hydration is important, right?)
These candid moments often end up being just as priceless as the final portraits.
Step 5: The Reveal – Cue the Goosebumps
After your session, we sit down for the image reveal. This is my favorite part — when you see yourself the way everyone else sees you. It’s not just about photos, it’s about the feeling of, “Wow… that’s me?” This is the moment I live for — when clients realize the confidence and beauty they didn’t even know they were showing.
Why BTS Matters
A behind-the-scenes look pulls the curtain back on the nerves and the unknown. Instead of wondering, “What happens if I look awkward?” you realize that the session is guided, relaxed, and genuinely fun.
